Pune: Actor Rahul Solapurkar’s Controversial Statement on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Agra Escape Sparks Protests
Pune, 5th February 2025: A recent statement by actor Rahul Solapurkar regarding Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s historic escape from Agra has sparked widespread controversy. Solapurkar claimed that contrary to popular belief, Shivaji Maharaj did not escape using sweet baskets but instead bribed several of Aurangzeb’s officers to secure his return to Maratha Kingdom.
His remarks triggered strong reactions, with many opposing his claims. On Monday, members of the Akhand Maratha Samaj protested at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune, where Solapurkar serves as a trustee. Demonstrators demanded his removal from the position and expressed their anger by striking his photograph with footwear.
Following the backlash, Solapurkar issued a public apology through a video message, stating that he did not intend to hurt the sentiments of Shivaji Maharaj’s admirers.
In response to the protests, Pune Police have increased security outside Solapurkar’s residence in Kothrud as a precaution.
