Pune to Expand Public Transit with New Electric Bus Routes and Metro Lines
Pune, 11th February 2025: Pune is set to undergo a significant expansion of its public transportation network with proposals for new electric bus routes and additional metro lines. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has unveiled plans for two major electric bus corridors and three new metro routes as part of a comprehensive transit strategy for the Pune Metropolitan Region.
Two new elevated electric bus routes, similar to Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems but fully electric, have been proposed. These routes will connect Shivajinagar to Alandi and Wakad to Shewalwadi (via Katraj), covering approximately 63 kilometres. Double-articulated electric buses will operate on dedicated elevated corridors, providing a high-capacity, eco-friendly transit solution.
In addition to the electric bus routes, three new metro lines have been proposed:
1. Pune District Court to Yewalewadi (via Kondhwa-Khadi Machine Chowk)
2. Savitribai Phule Pune University to Dehu Road
3. Kharadi to Khadakwasla (via Manik Baug-SNDT-Warje)
These new metro lines, along with extensions of existing routes, will add approximately 148 kilometres to Pune’s metro network. Additionally, a Nigdi to Chakan metro corridor is under study by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro).
The comprehensive transit plan, initially developed by PMRDA and reviewed by Maha Metro, also includes 128 kilometres of neo-metro or electric bus routes. These routes aim to integrate the High-Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) with key areas in Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune Municipal Corporation jurisdictions.
Currently, construction is underway on three metro routes spanning 33.5 kilometres, including the PMRDA-led Hinjawadi to Pune District Court line and two other projects managed by Maha Metro.
