Pune, 21st February 2025: In yet another case of food contamination at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), larvae were found in the food served at Boys’ Hostel No. 8. Following the incident, activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) confronted the mess owner, demanding accountability, and subsequently shut down the facility.

According to Shiva Barole, a member of the Catering Quality Control Committee, the hygiene and sanitation of the hostel mess and canteen have been a persistent concern. “Students have repeatedly found insects and larvae in their food, and despite previous complaints, the negligence continues,” he stated.

Over the past year, several such incidents have been reported, with students also discovering cockroaches in their meals. Despite previous protests and demands for better hygiene, the situation remains unchanged.

SPPU attracts students from across Maharashtra and other parts of the country, and many expect proper food quality in the university’s mess facilities. However, recurring cases of unhygienic conditions in hostel messes have raised serious concerns among students.
