Pune’s Katraj, Pashan, Peshwa, Model Colony and Pashan Lakes to Be Beautified
Pune, 28th February 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a ₹2 crore project to beautify four lakes in the city—Katraj, Pashan, Peshwa, and Model Colony—under the Central Government’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The PMC’s Standing Committee has given the green light for the project, and the tendering process has already begun.
Every year, the municipal administration allocates funds for lake cleaning and the removal of water plants. This time, ₹2 crore received under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan will be utilized for lake beautification. The Solid Waste Management Department had invited tenders for this work, which will focus on improving the surroundings of these lakes to make them more attractive to citizens.
As per the approved tenders, ₹41.88 lakh each will be spent on Pashan Lake and Katraj Lake, ₹49.42 lakh on Model Colony Lake, and ₹49 lakh on Peshwa Lake. The project aims to increase water retention capacity and address environmental concerns around the lakes.
The beautification work will include:
Planting trees around the lakes
Constructing concrete roads
Ensuring proper garbage disposal
Developing jogging tracks
Implementing strict action against littering
In addition, PMC will take up lake cleaning efforts as untreated drainage water continues to pollute these water bodies. In 2017, PMC had set up a drainage system to prevent polluted water from entering Katraj Lake. Currently, a sewage treatment plant with a capacity of two million liters per day is also being developed. Additionally, the lakes will be cleaned under the Amrut Yojana, a central government initiative.
PMC officials believe this initiative will not only enhance the beauty of Pune but also contribute to reducing pollution and improving air quality.
