Pune, 13th March 2025: In response to security concerns raised after a Swargate Bus Rape Case incident, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has decided to seek police assistance at sensitive highway bus stops. MSRTC has over 100 bus stops within the jurisdiction of 42 bus stations, some of which are located along highways. The corporation plans to identify vulnerable stops and communicate with police commissioners for necessary preventive measures.

In Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and rural areas under 14 depots, the Public Works Department (PWD) has set up bus stops and shelters along highways. These stops serve thousands of daily commuters traveling for work, education, or business. Unlike bus stations, long-route buses halt only at these designated stops along highways, making security a crucial concern. MSRTC has now decided to work with law enforcement to enhance safety measures at these locations.

Certain key locations, such as Chandni Chowk, Katraj, and Ravet, witness a high volume of commuters, especially IT employees traveling to Mumbai from the Hinjewadi bypass. Many passengers prefer boarding buses directly from these highway stops instead of traveling to the main stations. To ensure their safety, MSRTC will coordinate with police authorities to increase patrolling and surveillance.

Since several rural bus stops are in isolated areas, passengers often have to wait for long durations due to unforeseen delays. MSRTC will now map out sensitive bus stops and analyze passenger movement patterns to determine security requirements. The police will be informed about these stops, and a formal request for increased patrolling will be sent soon.

With over 100 bus stops and shelters in Pune and surrounding areas, MSRTC aims to strengthen security, particularly for female passengers. A list of high-risk locations will be finalized and shared with law enforcement to ensure a safer commuting experience for all passengers.
