Soaring Lemon Prices in Pune: A Refreshing Drink Turns Costly This Summer
Reported by Rajesh Ghodke
Pune, 18th March 2025: With summer temperatures rising, so is the demand for lemons—an essential ingredient in cool, refreshing drinks. However, this year, the soaring prices of lemons are leaving a sour taste in consumers’ mouths. At present, a single lemon is selling for ₹10 to ₹15 in Pune’s markets, making it a costly affair for households and street vendors alike.
For the past few days, the city has been experiencing intense heat, prompting people to turn to chilled beverages. Lemon water, a staple summer drink known for its instant refreshment, has seen a sharp rise in demand. However, the spike in lemon prices has made it a pricey option. According to market data, lemon production has significantly declined this year, contributing to the surge in prices.
Market Supply and Demand
Officials from the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) have attributed the price hike to reduced supply. “This year, the arrival of lemons in the wholesale market has dropped, which has naturally pushed up retail prices,” an APMC official said. In many retail markets, the cost of a single lemon has climbed to ₹10-₹12, yet demand remains steady, as lemons are a staple in Indian kitchens.
Omkar Irle, a local fruit and vegetable vendor, shared his experience: “As summer begins, customers prefer citrus fruits. Lemons, in particular, are in high demand, but the price surge has affected our profits. We buy lemons at ₹170 to ₹180 per kilogram in the wholesale market, with prices fluctuating between ₹6 and ₹8 per piece. Despite the high costs, we try to sell lemons in bulk or pair them with other vegetables to keep customers satisfied.”
Street Vendors Feel the Pinch
Even street vendors selling lemon-based drinks are feeling the pressure of rising costs. Shankar Bhandari, who runs a roadside nimbu pani stall, noted the change: “Last year, a full glass of lemon juice was ₹15, and a half glass was ₹10. This year, we’ve had to increase prices by ₹5 just to break even. While customers still buy it, some hesitate due to the increased cost.”

A Seasonal Trend or Long-Term Concern?
While minor fluctuations in lemon prices are common during summer, this year’s spike is raising concerns among consumers and traders. If production remains low and demand continues to rise, prices could escalate further. Until then, Pune residents will have to spend a little extra to enjoy their favorite summer refreshment.
