Look Up on August 3! Comet 10P/Tempel 2 to Make Its Brightest Appearance Since 1967
Uttarakhand, 27th July 2026: Skywatchers are in for a rare celestial spectacle as Comet 10P/Tempel 2 is set to make one of its closest approaches to Earth, offering astronomy enthusiasts a chance to witness the icy visitor during the first week of August.
Scientists at the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital, say the comet is expected to appear at its brightest around 3rd August. According to the institute, the comet last came this close to Earth in 1967, making this year’s appearance a rare opportunity for observers and researchers.
Comet 10P/Tempel 2 was discovered by German astronomer Wilhelm Tempel on 4th July 1873 and is named in his honour. The comet measures approximately 10.6 kilometres across and follows a periodic orbit around the Sun, returning to the inner Solar System after several years.
ARIES scientists said the comet is expected to be visible in the early morning hours before sunrise, provided weather conditions remain favourable and skies are clear. Viewers are advised to choose an open location away from city lights for the best chance of spotting the comet.
Astronomers believe the comet’s brightness during the first week of August will make it one of the most notable celestial events of the year. While binoculars or a small telescope may enhance the viewing experience, the comet could also be visible under ideal observing conditions.
With its return after nearly six decades at such close proximity, Comet 10P/Tempel 2 is expected to offer a memorable sight for astronomy enthusiasts and casual skywatchers alike.
