Daund, 29th March 2025: The male infant discovered in a jar in Daund was not a recent case but had been preserved for five years, according to the investigation report. Due to violations of health and biomedical laws, the Daund police have registered a case.

A pregnant woman had delivered the baby at just 18 to 20 weeks in a private hospital in Gopalwadi, Daund. The hospital stored the fetus in a formalin solution and used it for training students in its nursing college. This information emerged in a report submitted by the district surgeon to the health department.

On March 25, multiple jars were found discarded in the garbage in Daund. One contained a deceased infant, while the rest held human body parts, causing a major uproar. The Daund police seized the jars and registered a case against an unidentified person. Following the incident, District Surgeon Dr. Nagnath Yampalle inspected the site and submitted his findings to Dr. Radhakishan Pawar, the Deputy Director of Health, Pune Circle.

The report confirmed that one jar contained an infant, while ten others had various human organs, including a breast, testicles, uterus, placenta, and ovarian cysts. The health department conducted an inquiry at Bhangaale Hospital in Gopalwadi, where hospital staff stated that the organs had been surgically removed and preserved.

Additionally, a woman who visited the hospital on August 30, 2020, for abdominal pain had delivered an 18 to 20-week-old fetus. The hospital had preserved both the fetus and other organs without official permission and had used them for educational purposes.

According to Dr. Radhakishan Pawar, “The investigation found no violations of the Prenatal Sex Determination Act. However, storing human organs without authorization breaches the Anatomy Act, 1949, and disposing of them improperly violates biomedical waste regulations. As a result, the police have filed a case, and the medical superintendent of Daund Sub-District Hospital has issued a show-cause notice to the concerned hospital.”
