Pune: 41 Laborers, Including 19 Children, Rescued from Forced Captivity in Indapur
Indapur, 29th March 2025: In a major rescue operation in Indapur, Pune district, officials freed 41 individuals, including 22 adult laborers and 19 children, who had been held captive at their workplace in Reda. The action was taken after their relatives filed a complaint with the District Collector of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
Upon receiving the complaint, district officials swiftly coordinated with the Pune administration, prompting the Indapur Tehsildar and local police to intervene. As a result, the laborers were rescued, and legal action was initiated against the contractor and tractor owners responsible for their captivity.
Sandeep Tarachand Thakre and others, residents of Kannad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, filed a complaint with District Collector Dilip Swami on March 25. According to the complaint, the workers had arrived in Indapur in October 2024 for sugarcane harvesting under the arrangement of contractor Raghunath Dhanaji Sonawane and local tractor owners. They were given an advance payment of ₹12 lakh, but after six months of labor, they had received no wages.
