Chikhali, 30th March 2025: A Bangladeshi woman who had repeatedly entered India on a tourist visa was found to be illegally residing in Chikhali after marrying a local scrap dealer. The Chikhali police arrested both the woman and her husband, identified as Mohammad Rana Mohammad Salam Sheikh (33), a resident of Talwade and originally from Uttar Pradesh, and his Bangladeshi wife (30).

According to Senior Police Inspector Vitthal Salunkhe of Chikhali police station, the woman is a Bangladeshi national whose first husband works as a welder in Bangladesh. Since 2017, she had been frequently traveling to India on a tourist visa and had also stayed in Mumbai for some time. She came in contact with Sheikh through social media. In December 2021, she obtained another tourist visa and traveled to Chikhali to meet him. She was accompanied by her child from her first marriage.

Despite being aware of her Bangladeshi citizenship, Sheikh married her and they had a son together. The woman had been living in Chikhali for over three years. Upon receiving information about her illegal stay, the Chikhali police arrested both Sheikh and the woman. The investigation is being led by Assistant Police Inspector Gomare.

The woman’s tourist visa had expired on April 7, 2022. Instead of returning to Bangladesh, she continued to live with Sheikh, who provided her shelter. To conceal her identity, the couple burned her Bangladeshi passport as well as her child’s. The woman also managed to obtain an Aadhaar card, PAN card, and voter ID using forged documents, police said.
