Pune, 2nd April 2025: A fire broke out at Boys’ Hostel No. 8 of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on Tuesday, marking the second fire incident on the university premises in the last two months. No casualties were reported.

Last month, a fire had erupted in the forest area in front of the Registrar’s residence, which was brought under control by the fire brigade. The latest incident has once again raised concerns about fire safety measures within the university.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has strongly criticized the university administration, questioning the lack of fire safety arrangements. “There is no fire brigade facility within the university. The newly appointed Chief Hostel Officer and Additional Hostel Officer must take responsibility and implement appropriate measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” said Shiva Barole, an ABVP representative.

Barole further warned that if concrete steps are not taken to ensure student safety, the ABVP will launch a strong protest against the administration.

Despite repeated fire incidents, the university has yet to establish a dedicated fire safety mechanism. Students and organizations are now demanding immediate action to prevent potential risks to life and property.
