Pune, 3rd April 2025: A recent survey conducted by the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Sports Department has revealed that 10 out of the 35 municipal swimming pools in the city are currently closed due to various reasons. With the summer season in full swing, officials have issued urgent directives to repair and reopen these pools to accommodate the increasing demand from residents.

PMC operates 35 swimming pools across the city, offering affordable access to swimmers, which leads to high footfall during the summer months. At present, 25 pools are operational, while the remaining 10 have been shut due to pending repairs, legal disputes, or incomplete contractual processes. The prolonged closure not only inconveniences citizens but also impacts the PMC’s revenue. To address this, the Sports Department has instructed the concerned authorities to resolve technical issues and complete necessary maintenance work swiftly.

According to Kishori Shinde, Deputy Commissioner of the Sports Department, some pools remain shut due to incomplete tender processes, while others are entangled in legal battles or pending contractual agreements.

The following pools are currently non-operational due to ongoing repairs:
– Shivajinagar: MLA Shivajirao Bhosale Swimming Pool
– Yerawada: Keshavrao Dhere Swimming Pool
– Pashan: Bharat Ratna Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Swimming Pool
– Aundh Gaon: Aundh Swimming Pool
– Hadapsar: MP Vitthalrao Tupe Sports Complex Swimming Pool

Additionally, some pools have completed repair work but are yet to reopen due to administrative delays. The NV Gadgil Swimming Pool in Shanivar Peth is one such example. Meanwhile, the Narayan Tukaram Kawade Patil Swimming Pool in Ghorpadi has completed the tender process but remains closed due to pending contract finalization.

Other pools, such as the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Sports Complex Swimming Pool in Sahakarnagar and the Swami Vivekananda Swimming Pool in Bavdhan, are awaiting tender approvals and valuation assessments, respectively. The Shivdarshan Swimming Pool remains closed due to legal disputes and maintenance issues.

According to PMC officials, five of the closed pools require only minor repairs and contract approvals, and they are expected to be operational by the end of the month. However, reopening the remaining five pools may take longer due to technical complications.
