Junnar, 25th June 2025: In a remarkable agricultural breakthrough, progressive farmer Bharat Revji Jadhav from Buchkewadi village in Junnar taluka has discovered a new variety of mango with a unique taste blend of Hapus (Alphonso), Kesar, and Rajapuri. The variety, now named ‘Junnar Gold’, is under the process of being patented through the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPV&FRA) in New Delhi.

Developed after two decades of dedicated cultivation and observation, Jadhav’s orchard — located on two hectares of land — is home to over 400 mango trees, featuring renowned varieties such as Hapus, Kesar, Rajapuri, Badami, and Langda, all grown through organic farming methods. However, it was the discovery of two distinct trees in the orchard with never-seen-before features that sparked further investigation.

Unique Features of ‘Junnar Gold’
The standout characteristics of ‘Junnar Gold’ include:
Appearance similar to Rajapuri mangoes.
Weight ranging from 800 to 1000 grams per fruit.
Pulp weight is between 40 to 50 grams, with a rich saffron-colored interior.
Flavor profile is a rare combination, drawing from Hapus sweetness, Kesar richness, and Rajapuri tang.

Official Evaluation and Patent Proposal
The Narayangaon Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) played a crucial role in evaluating the variety. Following an inspection by Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer Satish Shirsath in 2024, the variety was further studied by Krishi Ratna Anil Tatya Meher, President of KVK, along with horticulture expert Bharat Temkar and Dr. Dattatreya Gawade.

Based on their recommendation, a formal proposal for exclusive rights under the Farmers’ Crop Varieties Protection Act has been submitted. Samples of the mango’s leaves and fruits have also been sent to Nashik’s agricultural laboratory for biochemical analysis. The results, officials say, validate the uniqueness of the variety.

“This variety bears fruit consistently every year. Its average weight is close to 900 grams, sometimes reaching up to a kilo. The fruit’s external yellow hue and saffron-colored pulp, along with its mixed taste profile of honey, Kesar, and Rajapuri, make it truly unique,” said Bharat Jadhav, expressing hope for formal recognition soon.

From Junnar to National Recognition
The proposal, routed via KVK Narayangaon, has now been forwarded from Delhi to Lucknow University, which collaborates with the authority in evaluating farmer-developed varieties. A team from the university is expected to visit Jadhav’s orchard soon for on-ground verification.

Community Impact
Locals and agriculture officials alike see this as a proud moment for rural innovation in Junnar, a region already known for its horticultural advancements. If approved, ‘Junnar Gold’ could become a registered geographical identity and significantly boost the local economy, offering opportunities for mango-based agri-businesses and tourism.

“This is not just a fruit but a symbol of farmer-led research and innovation,” said Anil Tatya Meher, commending Jadhav’s long-term vision and organic practices.
