No Toll Tax for Two-Wheelers on National Highways: Nitin Gadkari Clarifies Amid Media Rumours
New Delhi, 26th June 2025: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has dismissed media reports suggesting that the government plans to impose toll tax on two-wheelers using national highways. Taking to social media, the minister clarified that there is no such proposal under consideration, and the existing exemption for two-wheelers will remain in place.
Several news outlets had recently reported that two-wheelers may soon be required to pay toll on national highways—leading to confusion and concern among citizens who rely on motorcycles and scooters for long-distance travel. These vehicles, which form a major portion of road traffic in India, have so far been exempted from toll fees.
In a sharp response on X (formerly Twitter), Gadkari posted:
“Some media houses are spreading misleading news about imposing toll tax on two-wheeler vehicles. No such decision is proposed. The exemption for two-wheelers on toll roads will continue. Creating sensation by spreading misleading news without verifying facts is not healthy journalism. I condemn it.”
The minister’s statement quickly went viral with thousands of users thanking him for clarifying the government’s stance. Many social media users also criticized news outlets for running unverified reports that sparked unnecessary panic.
