Mumbai/Pune, 3rd July 2025: In a major push to position Pune as a premier destination for international sports and tourism, the Maharashtra government has unveiled plans for the Pune Grand Challenge Tour, an annual international-level cycling competition. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, while announcing the initiative at Vidhan Bhavan, said the event would place Pune firmly on the global sports calendar and help transform the city into a hub for tourism, fitness, and sustainable development.

Organized jointly by the Pune District Administration and the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), with the active support of the state government, the competition is set to debut in 2026. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Thursday between Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi and CFI in the presence of top state leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Higher Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, Sports Minister Dattatray Bharane, and Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat.

“Pune Will Become a Global Sports and Tourism Hub”
Chief Minister Fadnavis described the event as a strategic step toward leveraging Pune’s historical legacy, cultural richness, and natural beauty, combined with its growing prominence as a manufacturing and tech hub.

“The Pune Grand Challenge Tour will not only promote cycling as a sport but will also significantly boost tourism and attract investments. Pune will be recognized internationally, and the competition will soon become a global sporting event within the next three to four years,” said Fadnavis.

Highlighting the potential for tourism and economic growth, the Chief Minister added that the event will showcase Pune’s forts, Sahyadri ranges, reservoirs, and rural landscapes to global audiences, especially cycling enthusiasts across 200 countries.

“This initiative will create a cycle of development — promoting tourism, adventure sports, and healthy lifestyles while enhancing rural connectivity and environmental awareness,” Fadnavis noted.

Pathway to the 2028 Olympics
The proposed cycling tour is already approved by the Cycling Federation of India and is awaiting final approval from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), Switzerland. Once cleared, it could serve as a qualifying event for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, significantly raising the stakes and prestige of the competition.

Collector Jitendra Dudi, during a detailed presentation, emphasized that the route would pass through underexplored talukas of Pune district, showcasing the rich natural and cultural tapestry of the region. The event is also expected to support rural tourism, generate employment opportunities, and trigger infrastructure development in local communities.

“Pune Already Known as a Cycling City” – Ajit Pawar
Echoing the sentiment, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar praised the city’s long-standing association with cycling and pledged full support to strengthen its image.
“Pune has always had a strong cycling culture. This international event will take that legacy forward and provide a global platform to local talent,” Pawar said.

Boost to Adventure Sports, Local Economy
Officials believe the Pune Grand Challenge Tour will not only promote professional cycling but also build a robust ecosystem for adventure sports, eco-tourism, and sports infrastructure development in Pune and adjoining districts. With better visibility on the global map, the initiative is expected to stimulate local economies and encourage young athletes to pursue professional cycling.

The event saw the participation of key policymakers and bureaucrats including Additional Chief Secretaries Rajagopal Deora, Anil Diggikar, Vikas Kharge, Principal Secretaries Vijay Saurabh, Atul Patne, and Ashwini Bhide, Divisional Commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar, and Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram.
