Pune: PMC Approves Rs 9.17 Crore Project to Reduce Gangadham Chowk Road Slope After Fatal Mishap
Market Yard, 12th July 2025: In a key step to enhance road safety, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a major infrastructure project to reduce the steep gradient on the road stretch between Aai Mata Mandir and Gangadham Chowk, following a recent fatal accident in the area.
At its standing committee meeting on Friday, the civic body gave the green light to spend ₹9.17 crore on the project, which includes flattening the 500-metre road stretch and carrying out parallel work on water supply lines, drainage, and stormwater systems.
Aniruddha Pavaskar, chief of PMC’s road department, confirmed the development, saying, “We are aiming for a significant reduction in the road slope. Work is scheduled to start shortly, and we have set a target of completing it within nine months.”
The proposed work had previously been floated through tenders last year, but the process was delayed due to administrative hurdles. The civic body has now reinvited tenders and is in the process of finalizing an agency to execute the project.
The stretch falls under the Bibwewadi-Kondhwa corridor near Market Yard, an area that has seen rising traffic congestion and road safety concerns. Local residents have also demanded increased deployment of traffic wardens, particularly at Gangadham Chowk and surrounding junctions, to improve traffic regulation and prevent further mishaps.
The PMC’s decision is being seen as a much-needed response to public demand for safer road conditions in this densely populated and fast-developing part of the city.
