Pune: Advanced Driver Assistance Systems to Get Indian Touch with ARAI-Led Research
Pune, 18th July 2025: The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) is building a comprehensive database to support the development of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suited to Indian driving conditions, a senior official revealed.
Speaking about the initiative, Ujjwala Karle, Senior Deputy Director at ARAI, said, “We have been working for the past two to three years on creating a robust dataset that reflects Indian traffic scenarios. This will help in accelerating the development and integration of ADAS technology across Indian vehicles.”
The effort is part of ARAI’s broader push to advance intelligent mobility solutions and enhance road safety. Karle highlighted that ARAI’s Centre of Excellence for Intelligent Vehicle Technologies is at the forefront of these innovations. “We are focusing on building simulation models and software that can understand and respond to complex Indian road environments and infrastructure patterns,” she added.
In addition to data development, ARAI is also exploring ways to make vision-based systems more accessible and affordable. These systems play a key role in safety features like forward collision warnings and automatic emergency braking.
“Our goal is to create cost-effective sensor solutions that can support these life-saving features in both premium and mass-market vehicles,” Karle noted.

With the Indian automotive industry gradually moving toward autonomous and semi-autonomous technologies, ARAI’s work is expected to serve as a critical foundation for making such systems reliable and scalable for Indian roads.
