Pune: PMC Plans New Flyover from Sakhar Sankul to Wakdewadi to Ease Traffic
Shivajinagar, 24th July 2025: In a bid to reduce persistent traffic congestion in the Shivajinagar area, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed the construction of a new flyover connecting the Sakhar Sankul Complex in Narveer Tanajiwadi to the old Pune-Mumbai highway near Wakdewadi.
The administration has submitted a proposal to appoint a project consultant, which is currently pending approval before the Standing Committee.
The existing route from Fergusson College Road to Narveer Tanajiwadi and Wakdewadi relies on an underpass beneath the railway line. However, the narrow passage often causes severe traffic bottlenecks, particularly for larger vehicles. These heavy vehicles are forced to take a longer route via the Shivajinagar old ST stand and Sancheti Chowk, further aggravating the traffic situation.
To resolve this, PMC’s plan includes a dedicated flyover that will bypass the railway line. The new structure will have separate lanes: one for vehicles heading towards Wakdewadi and another towards the College of Engineering Pune (COEP) area.
Officials also indicated that in the future, state transport (ST) buses arriving from Sangamwadi and Wakdewadi may be routed via this flyover, enhancing traffic flow around the busy Shivajinagar bus terminal.
