Lonavala, 27th July 2025: The scenic hill station of Lonavala and nearby areas like Karla witnessed massive traffic jams over the last two weekends, as thousands of tourists poured in to enjoy the monsoon rains. Popular spots such as Bhushi Dam and Lions Point drew the largest crowds, leading to severe congestion on the Mumbai-Pune National Highway and internal roads.

Tourists from across Maharashtra and even other states are arriving in Lonavala to enjoy the unique charm of the monsoon. The water cascading over the steps of Bhushi Dam, misty mountain views, and spontaneous roadside waterfalls are major attractions. Many visitors are seen standing under natural waterfalls and enjoying the cold rainwater, turning the region into a bustling monsoon playground.

However, the surge in tourism has come at a cost. Traffic congestion has become a regular weekend ordeal, with local residents and tourists alike stuck in long queues of vehicles across various parts of the hill station. Key tourist points including Tiger Point, Rajmachi Point, Dukes Nose, Sunset Point, Tungarli Dam, Bhaje Waterfall, Pavananagar, and Karla Caves also experienced overwhelming crowds.

Despite the inconvenience, tourists continue to arrive undeterred. “Even with traffic, this place is worth the visit in the rains,” said one tourist from Mumbai. The frequent rainfall in the ghats has triggered seasonal waterfalls, adding to the appeal.

On the economic front, the tourist rush is bringing relief to local businesses. From big hotels to small tea stalls and vada pav vendors, everyone is benefiting from the increased footfall. “This is our peak season. We look forward to the monsoon every year,” said a vendor near Bhushi Dam.

While tourism boosts the local economy, residents are increasingly concerned about the growing inconvenience. Civic authorities are being urged to implement better traffic management to strike a balance between welcoming visitors and maintaining order.

As the monsoon continues to attract nature lovers to Lonavala, managing the crowd while preserving the region’s natural beauty and ensuring safety will be a critical challenge in the weeks ahead.
