Pune: Work on Shivne-Kharadi Road Project Gains Momentum as Land Acquisition Advances
Pune, 3rd August 2025: After years of delays due to land acquisition hurdles, the long-awaited Shivne-Kharadi riverside road project is finally showing signs of progress. With fresh efforts initiated by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), land procurement for the stalled sections is picking up pace, particularly in the Kharadi to Vadgaon Sheri stretch.
“If the Shivne-Kharadi road is completed, a major traffic problem will be solved. Discussions are underway with landowners regarding TDR and FSI. We are trying to complete the technical process of land acquisition as soon as possible. Further action can be taken after this process is completed.” — Om Prakash Divate, Additional Commissioner, Pune Municipal Corporation
Coordination with the Metro administration is also underway to acquire crucial land near Gunjan Chowk in Yerawada, further boosting hopes that construction work will resume soon.
The proposed 11.5-kilometer Shivne-Kharadi road, aimed at decongesting key traffic corridors, especially between Yerawada and Kharadi, has been partially completed. The segment from Kharadi to Mundhwa Bridge is already open for vehicular movement. However, land acquisition and technical issues have caused significant delays on the remaining stretch from Vadgaon Sheri to Yerawada.
Major Push from Civic Authorities
Following a site inspection on June 26 by Additional Municipal Commissioner Om Prakash Divate, MLA Bapu Pathare, and Chief Engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar, the civic administration intensified efforts to resolve the bottlenecks. Divate directed the Road Department to expedite the process, and since then, noticeable progress has been made.
According to PMC officials, 50% of the required land for the pending stretch has been acquired. Notices have been served to landowners for the remaining land. Of the 11.5 km total, 6 km have been secured, with acquisition pending for 4 km between Sangamwadi and Gunjan Chowk, along with 500 meters at Gunjan Chowk and 1 km between Vadgaon Sheri and Kharadi.
Land Acquisition Details and Costs
- Survey No. 20 in Kharadi: ₹26 crore
- Remaining land in Kharadi: ₹346 crore
- Vadgaon Sheri land: ₹330 crore
Proposals for land acquisition, prepared under the new Land Acquisition Act, have already been submitted to the District Collector’s office for both Kharadi and Vadgaon Sheri regions.
Coordination with Metro Authority
One of the key challenges remains a land parcel near Gunjan Chowk, currently under the possession of the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation. This land, initially allocated by the state for the Metro project, is now being sought by the Municipal Corporation for road development. A formal request has been submitted to the Metro administration, and PMC officials are optimistic about receiving a favorable response soon.
