Dating Apps, Emotional Burnout and the Search for Real Love in Pune
By Devapriya K J
Pune, 6th August 2025: The entire concept of love has changed throughout the ages, from letters to right-swipe dating has drastically evolved. The advancement of technology and changing social habits have now intertwined into every stage of the modern dating process. The entire idea of romantic partners and healthy relationships has been reshaped by online dating platforms and apps.
Today, individuals connect and begin relationships through online means. Platforms like Bumble, Tinder and Hinge have paved the way for users to initiate such connections. These platforms not just widened the options but also redefined the entire nature of human connection. Individuals are able to connect with people outside their circle, resulting in diverse partnerships, both personally and academically.
“I joined a dating app during my college times out of curiosity, but even now, after college, I’m still there. Sometimes I talk to people, lose connection and block them and start talking to others. I feel like people have lost that true connection, everyone is scared of being real,” says a 28-year-old IT employee.
It’s the abundance of options that makes dating much more complicated. Individuals start seeing dating apps as an easy route to a non-committed life. This kind of mentality in people has led to what we now call “Ghosting Communication”, which refers to the unexplained contact often leaving the opposite individual hurt and confused.
“He called me last night and then blocked me the next day without any explanation. I don’t know what I did wrong. There is no closure, and that’s the worst thing about online dating platforms. I’m genuinely confused and hurt,” says a 22-year-old college student.
The traditional love language has evolved over time; texting and story posting have become the new love language. Individuals start choosing digital intimacy over real human connections. Sharing reels, memes, and playlists is now considered an expression of affection. These shifts have transformed the idea of long-term relationships, giving rise to the hookup culture.
“People can be so open online but awkward in real life,” says a 20-year-old college student. “It’s like we’ve forgotten how to have real conversations without a screen.”
Even with its imperfections, there are successful stories and happy endings of couples who met through dating apps. There are still people who strive for romantic relationships, and nowadays, some dating apps like Bumble and Tinder have transitioned towards promoting deeper, long-term connections.
“I met my girlfriend on Tinder. We bond over cats and music. 4 years later, we’re still going strong and planning to get married soon. I never thought I would find something genuine through a dating app,” says a 30-year-old photographer.
Dating in the digital age is defined by rapid change, immense opportunity, and new complexities. Technology has brought greater diversity and choice, but also new forms of anxiety and etiquette. As algorithms, artificial intelligence, and online communities continue to evolve, the journey toward meaningful digital-age romance is becoming ever more personalized, inclusive, and innovative. But perhaps the most timeless aspect of love, like vulnerability, trust, and shared moments, still matters.
In the end, whether it begins with a swipe or a smile, meaningful connections still require effort, honesty, and the courage to show up, both online and offline.
