Pune Records 49 Brain-Dead Donors and 131 Organ Transplants in 2025 So Far: ZTCC

Pune, 12th August 2025: The Pune zone has witnessed 49 brain-stem death (BSD) donors being converted into organ retrievals between January 1 and August 12, 2025, resulting in 131 transplanted organs, according to the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) Pune.

Sharing the data, ZTCC Pune coordinator Arti Gokhale said that of the organs transplanted this year, 71 were kidneys, 41 were livers, four were hearts, nine were lungs, one was a combined kidney-pancreas, one was a combined heart-lung, and one was a combined kidney-heart transplant.

In comparison, 2024 saw a total of 70 BSD donors converted into retrievals, leading to 181 transplanted organs in the Pune zone. These included 93 kidneys, 58 livers, six hearts, 14 lungs, four kidney-pancreas combinations, and one heart-lung transplant.

Gokhale noted that the year-on-year data highlights sustained organ donation efforts in the city. In 2023, there were 58 donors and 158 transplanted organs, while 2022 recorded 46 donors and 118 transplanted organs, and 2021 had 44 donors with 97 transplants.

“Each donor gives the gift of life to multiple recipients. Continued awareness and cooperation between hospitals, families, and coordination teams are essential to sustain and improve these numbers,” Gokhale said.

The ZTCC Pune plays a crucial role in coordinating organ retrieval and allocation in the city, ensuring fair and timely distribution to patients in need.
