Pune Police Introduces AI-Driven Traffic Enforcement to Improve Road Safety and Reduce Violations
Pune, 12th August 2025: In a bid to improve traffic discipline and ease congestion, Pune City Police have deployed an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered traffic monitoring system. The initiative, spearheaded by Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and Joint Commissioner Ranjankumar Sharma, incorporates AI-enabled cameras and mobile applications into daily traffic enforcement operations.
The pilot phase of the project commenced on May 28, 2025, along Fergusson College Road, with technical support from Vijay Khoopse, Director of SenSen Networks. Over a two-month period, the automated system identified 3,949 traffic violations without the need for on-site police presence.
The recorded infractions included:
1,335 instances of no-parking violations
1,886 double-parking cases
719 incidents of wrong-side driving
42 triple-riding violations
9 cases of mobile phone use while driving
Police data revealed that only about 1% of offenders were repeat violators, reflecting a notable improvement in traffic behavior in the pilot zone. Officials also observed a reduction in congestion as a direct result of AI monitoring.
Plans for Expansion
Encouraged by the trial’s success, Pune Police intend to install AI surveillance cameras in patrolling vehicles under a Proof of Concept (POC) model. These mobile units will detect violations in real time during routine patrols and issue e-challans automatically, expanding enforcement capabilities beyond fixed camera locations and targeting high-offense routes.

Quicker and more transparent action against offenders, minimizing disputes between motorists and police
If the broader rollout achieves its objectives, the department plans to equip all patrol vehicles with AI systems, enabling the detection of a wider range of traffic violations. This initiative forms part of a larger modernization strategy for Pune Police and is expected to merge with the state’s Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) once sanctioned.
Officials emphasized that the primary aim of the project is to reduce human intervention, boost operational accuracy, and ensure smoother traffic flow for Pune’s commuters.
