Pune Traffic Police Use AI Cameras to Penalise Nearly 4,000 Violators Since May
Pune, 13th August 2025: Artificial intelligence-powered cameras mounted on patrol vehicles have helped Pune traffic police crack down on 3,982 traffic rule violations since the initiative began on Fergusson College (FC) Road on May 28.
According to Additional Commissioner of Police (East Region) Manoj Patil, the AI-enabled system automatically detects offences and registers cases without human intervention. “This technology has significantly improved our ability to act against offenders in real time, and its impact on deterring violations is clearly visible,” Patil said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
The data shows that 1,335 motorists were booked for no-parking offences, 1,886 for double parking, 719 for driving on the wrong side, 42 for riding triple seat, and nine for using a mobile phone while driving.
Police officials believe the AI-based system is helping ensure greater transparency in enforcement and reducing disputes between motorists and traffic personnel. The project is expected to be expanded to other busy stretches of the city in the coming months.
