Pune: Introduction of Iris Scan Option for Hassle-Free Rent Agreement Registrations
Pune, 14th August 2025: Citizens registering rent agreements in Pune can now opt for iris scan verification instead of fingerprints, thanks to a new facility introduced by the Registration and Stamps Department from Wednesday midnight. The move is designed to address difficulties faced by applicants, particularly senior citizens, whose fingerprints often fail to register.
Until now, the department’s “2.0” online system for processing Leave and Licence agreements depended solely on Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication. In several instances, fingerprint mismatches caused delays or left registrations incomplete even after payments and document submissions. Many affected applicants were compelled to issue a power of attorney to someone else to complete the process, a step considered legally risky.
Responding to repeated appeals from the Association of Service Providers, represented by Sachin Shinghvi and Mangesh Patil, the department’s IT division has upgraded its system to enable iris scans for Aadhaar verification. This ensures that applicants with unreadable fingerprints can still complete their registrations without interruptions.
“With the new option, people will no longer lose valuable time or money because of failed fingerprint scans. Both methods — fingerprint and iris — are now available, making the system more citizen-friendly,” Shinghvi noted.
According to Deputy Inspector General of Registration (IT) Abhaysingh Mohite, the department is also exploring the possibility of extending iris scan verification to marriage registrations in the future.
