IMD Predicts Moderate to Heavy Rainfall in Maharashtra Till August 20; Pune Ghats on High Alert
Pune, 16th August 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a fresh spell of moderate to heavy rainfall across Maharashtra, including Pune, lasting until August 20, as monsoon conditions strengthen over the region.
According to IMD, the revival has been triggered by a low-pressure system that has shifted southward from its average position, enhancing rain activity. A cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km over the Bay of Bengal, near the South Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh coast, is moving northwestward, while another circulation at 3.1 km over the Arabian Sea is expected to further intensify the rainfall.
Regional Forecast
Pune city: Moderate showers likely.
Pune district ghats: Heavy rainfall forecast in Junnar, Lonavala, Khandala, Maval, Mulshi, Velhe, and Bhor.
Mumbai, Konkan, and Western Maharashtra: More intense showers predicted.
Statewide: Moderate to heavy rainfall across several regions.
While Pune city has recorded below-average rainfall in August so far (against the monthly norm of 128 mm), the district overall has seen above-average showers in the ghats.
Key figures include:
Tamhini: 6,248 mm (highest in the district)
Lonavala: 3,398 mm
Mulshi: 2,761 mm
IMD officials added that the upcoming spell is expected to push August rainfall figures closer to the seasonal average, after a brief lull earlier this month.
