Pimpri, 19th August 2025: The Irrigation Department has issued a flood alert for areas along the Pawana river after the Pawana Dam reached 99.42 percent of its storage capacity on Tuesday morning.

According to officials, a total of 2,860 cusecs of water is currently being discharged into the river basin—1,400 cusecs through the hydroelectric power station and 1,460 cusecs through the dam’s effluent channel.

With continuous rainfall in the catchment area, inflows into the dam remain high. To maintain safe water levels, the discharge is likely to be increased to 4,260 cusecs through the effluent by 2 pm today. After the increase, the total outflow from the dam may reach 5,660 cusecs.

Authorities have cautioned that the volume of discharge could be reduced or increased in stages depending on the intensity and duration of rainfall in the catchment region.

In a statement, the Pawana Dam Flood Control Cell appealed to residents: “Citizens along the Pawana river are requested to take appropriate precautions and extend full cooperation to the Water Resources Department and the district administration.”

Residents living near the riverbanks in Pimpri-Chinchwad and surrounding areas have been advised to stay alert and avoid venturing into the riverbed.
