Pune: Ektanagari Area Faces Flood Threat Again After 35,000 Cusecs Released from Khadakwasla Dam
Pune, 19th August 2025: Heavy discharge from Khadakwasla dam has triggered flooding concerns in Pune, with water entering riverside settlements along Sinhagad Road. On Tuesday, as much as 35,574 cusecs of water was released from the dam, pushing the floodwaters into low-lying residential areas of Ektanagari in Anandnagar.
Residents reported that stagnant backwater from the stream could not merge with the river due to the rising level, causing it to flow backwards and inundate housing societies. Water has entered Jalpujan, Shamsunder, Dwarka, Raj, and Sai Siddharth societies, forcing families to evacuate ground-floor houses and shops.
The district administration has assured that the situation is “under control,” but on the ground, citizens are witnessing increasing water levels and displacement. Authorities have arranged temporary shelter at the badminton hall on Sun City Road, yet panic prevails among locals as the risk of flooding grows.
Continuous rainfall in the upstream catchment areas of Khadakwasla, along with additional flow from the open catchment below the dam, has worsened the situation. This has resulted in actual river flow exceeding the dam’s discharge, raising concerns that flood levels could rise further.
Officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation and disaster management teams remain on standby, but residents expressed worry over the widening gap between administrative assurances and the reality of rising floodwaters. If the rains continue, authorities fear the situation could escalate into a major flood crisis.
