Pune: Do You Know? The Kasba Ganpati–Shivaji Maharaj Connection That Defines Pune’s Identity
Pune, 21st August 2025: Did you know that Pune’s most revered Ganesh idol, Kasba Ganpati, has a historic connection with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Rajmata Jijabai? Known as the Gramdevata (presiding deity) of the city, Kasba Ganpati is not only Pune’s “Manacha Pahila Ganpati” (first honored Ganesh) in the grand Ganesh festival but also a silent witness to the birth of Swarajya.
Jijau’s Divine Vision
In 1636, when Shahaji Raje established the Lal Mahal for Jijabai and young Shivaji, she took charge of reviving Pune’s spiritual life. According to legend, Jijabai had a divine vision of Lord Ganesh, leading to the consecration of Kasba Ganpati between 1640 and 1642. She even sowed seeds with a golden plough, symbolizing the spiritual foundation of Shivaji’s dream of self-rule.
Shivaji Maharaj’s Sacred Ritual:
Growing up at Lal Mahal, Shivaji Maharaj regularly visited Kasba Ganpati. Before setting out on any military campaign, he and his loyal Mavalas sought the deity’s blessings, believing victories flowed from Ganpati’s grace. This tradition made Kasba Ganpati not just a temple, but a spiritual rallying point of the Maratha warriors.
Pune’s Gramdevata:
Kasba Ganpati was recognized as the protector deity of Pune, with rituals and temple management entrusted to the Thakar family from Karnataka — a custom still carried on today. As Pune grew from Kasba Peth into a bustling city, the temple remained its cultural and spiritual nucleus.
First Honor in Ganeshotsav:
When Lokmanya Tilak transformed Ganesh Utsav into a public festival in the late 19th century, Kasba Ganpati was given the first honor in the immersion procession. This tradition, alive for over a century, reflects both faith and heritage. Even today, lakhs of devotees gather in Pune to witness the Kasba Ganpati visarjan leading the city’s Ganeshotsav.
Living Legacy of Swarajya:
Kasba Ganpati stands as more than a sacred idol. It is a symbol of Jijabai’s foresight, Shivaji Maharaj’s courage, and the spirit of Swarajya. For Pune, it remains a proud reminder of its roots, identity, and cultural pride — an unbroken link between history and devotion.
So, when Pune celebrates its grand Ganeshotsav and Kasba Ganpati takes the first place of honor, it isn’t just ritual. It is history, culture, and the blessing of Shivaji Maharaj and Jijau living on.
