Pune, 23rd August 2025: Traffic congestion in Pune is no longer just a citizen’s headache; even political leaders are finding themselves trapped in the gridlock. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray was stuck in a jam on Friday, with his convoy taking nearly 25 minutes to cover the short stretch from Sonya Maruti Chowk to Phadke Chowk — a journey that usually takes just five minutes.

While Thackeray’s delay made headlines, Pune residents were once again the real sufferers. Commuters had to wait longer as traffic was halted for the VIP movement, with a 10-minute route dragging on for over an hour.
For Puneites, such ordeals are part of daily life. Peak-hour traffic often turns short trips into long, exhausting journeys. Narrow roads, increasing vehicle numbers, unplanned roadworks, poor traffic management, and illegal parking continue to worsen the situation.

Citizens also point out that VIP visits add to the chaos. Road closures for security reasons intensify jams, leaving ordinary people stranded. “Leaders may face inconvenience for a few minutes, but for us it’s a daily nightmare,” said a commuter near Phadke Chowk.

Residents are demanding faster completion of roadworks, promotion of metro and public transport, strict action against illegal parking, and the use of smart signals and modern traffic management systems. Many fear that without urgent measures, Pune’s traffic crisis will soon reach an unmanageable level.
