ECI Approves July 1 Cutoff for Voter List in Maharashtra Local Body Elections
Pune, 24th August 2025: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has cleared the State Election Commission’s (SEC) proposal to use the electoral rolls updated till July 1 as the basis for the upcoming local body elections across Maharashtra. With this approval, all citizens who enrolled themselves as voters up to midnight of July 1 will be eligible to cast their vote, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The SEC had sought this cutoff date to facilitate the ward-wise division of voters, which is essential for finalizing electoral rolls. Earlier, the list prepared for the state assembly elections was under consideration. “We have now received final approval, and the ward-wise lists have been created using the rolls revised till July 1,” said a senior SEC officer.
The local body elections will cover a massive scale of governance — 29 municipal corporations, 290 nagar panchayats and nagar parishads, 32 zilla parishads, and 336 panchayat samitis. Draft ward structures for municipal corporations have already been released, and local authorities have been directed to upload them within the stipulated deadline.
The SEC will soon issue a separate notification detailing polling station requirements, including accessibility for persons with disabilities and provision of basic amenities. Officials clarified that only minor corrections can be made within a week-long window. “No fresh additions or deletions will be allowed in this short period,” an SEC representative added.
