Pune: Kondhwa Slaughterhouse Reopens After Conditional Nod from Pollution Control Board
Kondhwa, 10th September 2025: The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has granted conditional permission to reopen the Kondhwa slaughterhouse of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), which was shut down in May for violating pollution control norms. The reopening comes after PMC deposited a bank guarantee of Rs 2 lakh and committed to implementing corrective measures.
The Kondhwa facility is the only civic-run slaughterhouse in Pune city and is primarily used for buffalo slaughter. Local residents had repeatedly complained about pollution from the unit, following which MPCB officials conducted an inspection earlier this year. The board found several lapses, issued a notice to PMC, and directed it to take remedial action. However, with no major improvements carried out, the board ordered the closure of the facility on May 8.
With no alternative slaughterhouse available, PMC requested the board to consider its mitigation plan and allow resumption of operations. After re-inspection, MPCB gave conditional clearance on August 13. At present, only 10 large animals are being slaughtered daily, with plans to gradually increase the number to 70 by December.
“The slaughterhouse has reopened in limited capacity. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has asked us to implement pollution-control measures and gradually scale up operations. Currently, 10 animals are being slaughtered per day, and this will be increased in phases up to 70 animals by the end of the year,” said Dr Sarika Funde, Chief Veterinary Officer, PMC.
Measures mandated by MPCB
