Pune, 16th September 2025: The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has imposed a hefty penalty of ₹55 crore on Olectra Greentech Limited following repeated breakdowns of its electric buses due to substandard batteries. The decision comes after mounting public criticism over frequent service disruptions affecting thousands of daily commuters.

According to PMPML officials, 45 electric buses experienced battery-related failures in the past 45 days alone. These recurring issues forced the transport authority to reduce scheduled services, adding strain to Pune’s already stretched public transport network.

“The poor battery performance has not only disrupted services but has also increased the financial burden on PMPML,” said a senior official. “This is a clear breach of the quality standards agreed upon in the contract, and the manufacturer must take full responsibility.”

To address the immediate problem, PMPML has instructed that 25 e-buses with defective batteries undergo a complete battery replacement, with the cost borne entirely by Olectra Greentech as per contractual obligations.

PMPML chairman and managing director Pankaj Deore emphasised that the penalty is intended to ensure accountability. “Repeated breakdowns and the use of substandard batteries have forced us to take strict action. Citizens cannot bear the brunt of poor service,” he said. “Olectra must replace the defective batteries immediately. If issues continue, we may consider even stricter measures, including blacklisting the company for future contracts.”

The e-bus initiative was launched as part of Pune’s sustainable urban mobility programme, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and modernising public transport. However, ongoing technical glitches have raised concerns about the project’s reliability.

Transport experts warn that repeated failures could undermine public confidence in electric mobility and push commuters back to private vehicles, increasing congestion and pollution.

By imposing this record fine, PMPML has sent a strong signal to all contractors and suppliers that compromising on quality will not be tolerated. For thousands of daily commuters, the move is a reassurance that service standards and passenger convenience remain a top priority.
