Kharadi IT Park in Pune Now Has Maharashtra’s Highest Industrial Water Tariff
Kharadi, 24th September 2025: The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has raised water tariffs for industries, making Kharadi IT Park home to the most expensive industrial water in the state. The new rates are reportedly four times higher than those in Hinjawadi’s Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park.
According to MIDC, the hike is a response to increasing water tariffs imposed by the Maharashtra Water Resources Authority and rising electricity costs regulated by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission. Industrial water rates vary across sectors and locations, with the highest rate in Kharadi IT Park currently at Rs 102.75 per 1,000 liters, set to rise to Rs 104.75 per 1,000 liters.
Other regions have also seen tariff increases: Beed (Rs 32.75), Mumbai Metropolitan Region (Rs 26), and Pimpri-Chinchwad, Chakan, Talwade, and Hinjawadi (Rs 24.25 per 1,000 liters).
How MIDC Supplies Water
MIDC sources municipal water for Kharadi IT Park, for which Pune Municipal Corporation charges a commercial rate of Rs 88.35 per 1,000 liters. MIDC operates a water tank within the park and distributes water to industries via pipelines. The tariff also covers maintenance, electricity, staffing, and the operation of the sewage treatment plant. Currently, daily water demand in Kharadi IT Park is around 1.5 lakh liters.
Confusion Over Circular
A circular issued by MIDC earlier caused confusion by stating the Kharadi IT Park rate as Rs 40.75 per 1,000 liters, instead of the correct Rs 104.75. The Pune office has submitted a proposal to MIDC headquarters to correct the circular, and the revised rates are expected to be implemented soon.
Prasanna Raghav Joshi, Executive Engineer, Water Supply Department, Pune Municipal Corporation, explained that water supplied to MIDC in Kharadi IT Park is charged at commercial rates, which reflects both the municipal commercial tariff and additional operational costs.
