Pune, 24th September 2025: Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Monday instructed the Medical Education Department to coordinate urgently with the Union government to establish an AIIMS centre in Pune, officials present at the meeting in Mumbai said. The project was proposed in the 2024-25 interim state budget, and Pawar also asked the Pune district administration to identify a suitable land parcel for the institute.

Speaking to reporters, Pune Divisional Commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar said, “We are currently examining land options in Pimpri-Chinchwad and within the PMRDA limits. AIIMS is a prestigious institute, and its establishment here will significantly strengthen the state’s health infrastructure.”

An official from the Medical Education Department confirmed that a formal letter has already been sent to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. “We are following up closely with the ministry to ensure progress,” the official added. Pawar, who also serves as Pune’s guardian minister, said he would personally follow up with the Central government during his next visit to New Delhi.

The directive came during a review meeting of the Deputy CM’s Project Monitoring Cell at Mantralaya. Pawar also assessed the progress of the long-pending Beed-Parli railway line, instructing the Central Railway and district collectors to expedite remaining land acquisitions. Officials quoted Pawar as saying, “This railway line will enhance Marathwada’s connectivity and link Parli directly with Ahilyanagar, creating new avenues for economic development.”

In addition, Pawar reviewed the Pune Metro Line-3 project (Shivajinagar to Hinjewadi) and emphasized taking special measures to minimize traffic congestion during the ongoing festive season.
