Pune: PMC to Acquire 22.26 Hectares for Mula-Mutha Riverfront Development Project

Pune, 26th September 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to acquire 22.26 hectares of land from various government departments to advance its ambitious Mula-Mutha riverfront beautification project.

The land includes parcels from the Women and Child Welfare Department at Mundhwa, the Defence Department at Sangamwadi, and the Forest Department at Koregaon Park. With approval from the Defence Department now secured, the project is poised to move forward.

The initiative aims to improve and beautify approximately 44.4 kilometers of the Mula-Mutha riverbank flowing through the city. Since much of this land is under state and central government control, PMC has been negotiating acquisition for several months.

On Thursday, a key meeting on land acquisition was held under the chairmanship of PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, with District Collector Jitendra Dudi, Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P., City Engineer Prashant Waghmare, Project Department Head Dinkar Gojare, and Executive Engineer Bipin Shinde in attendance.

In Sangamwadi, around 7 hectares of Defence Department land are included in the project. Beautification work on this land has already begun, following prior permission from the Defence authorities. In return, PMC will carry out works valued at ₹32 crore for the Defence Department at locations of their choosing. An official agreement is expected to be signed next week. The Defence Department’s approval is expected to remove significant obstacles that had slowed progress on the project.

At Mundhwa, approximately 3.4 hectares of land belonging to the state government’s Women and Child Development Department, currently designated as a botanical garden, will be required. Similarly, about 11 hectares of Forest Department land at Koregaon Park are also needed. Discussions regarding the acquisition of these lands are ongoing, said City Engineer Prashant Waghmare.

Part of the riverfront development is already being executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. However, progress has been slow due to delays in land acquisition. “PMC is making concerted efforts to ensure speedy acquisition of the required land so that the project can move forward without further obstacles,” Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram stated.
