Pune: PMC to Set Up Temporary Fodder Shelters, Drinking Water Facilities for Stray Cattle
Pune, 5th November 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will establish temporary fodder shelters and drinking water facilities for stray and abandoned cattle across the city to ensure their basic needs are met during periods of water scarcity. The PMC Standing Committee approved a proposal moved by corporator and committee member Suhas Tingre on Thursday.
Under the proposal, temporary fodder shelters will be established in areas where the population of stray cattle is high. Additionally, water containers and tanks will be placed at public locations, including major junctions, open spaces and areas frequently visited by stray animals. These facilities will provide free drinking water to the animals.
The proposal comes against the backdrop of the possible implementation of alternate-day water supply in Pune. Tingre highlighted that reduced water availability could make it difficult for stray cattle to access drinking water, forcing them to wander in search of it.
Earlier, following the merger of 32 villages into the PMC limits, Tingre had proposed the construction of permanent and well-equipped gaushalas (cattle shelters) for the proper care of abandoned and stray cattle. The proposal had already received approval from the PMC General Body. However, since the construction of these facilities is expected to take time, he stressed the need for temporary arrangements to ensure food and water for the animals in the meantime.
Tingre has demanded that the temporary fodder shelters and drinking water facilities become operational from the first day of alternate-day water supply. The initiative will involve the participation of gaushala organisations, cow protection groups and animal welfare NGOs.
The proposal also calls for the PMC to provide the necessary land, manpower and financial resources to ensure the effective implementation of these arrangements.
