Pune Diwali Celebration for Street Kids: New Clothes, Sweets, and Fireworks
Pune, 20th October 2025: While the city of Pune glimmers with lights and the air fills with the sounds of fireworks, not all children experience the joy of Diwali. Many underprivileged children, selling balloons, toys, and tricolours on the streets, often do not know the essence of the festival. But for the past two decades, the Aaba Bagul Mitra family has been working to change that, bringing the spirit of Diwali to these young lives.
This year, Goodluck Chowk transformed into a vibrant festival ground for these children. Rangolis adorned the streets, a raised platform welcomed the children, and volunteers prepared fragrant oils, pearl soaps, and warm water for a refreshing bath. For these children, who usually spend their mornings on the pavement with their parents, this was more than just a celebration—it was a taste of the Diwali they deserved.
The morning began with volunteers cleaning the area, repairing old rangolis, and preparing the platform. When the children arrived, their eyes lit up at the sight of the colourful decorations. They were seated on the platform, treated to a bath with fragrant oils and soaps, dressed in new clothes, and handed sweets. The day ended with laughter, crackers, and the simple joy of being celebrated.
Former Deputy Mayor Aba Bagul, who has been a part of this initiative for years, said, “While Diwali is being celebrated with great enthusiasm everywhere, these children are selling balloons and toys on the streets without even asking for alms. They, too, have the right to enjoy Diwali. Through our family initiative, we ensure they experience the festival with new clothes, sweets, and fireworks.”
The event was a heartwarming reminder that Diwali is not just about lights and celebrations—it is about spreading joy and compassion, especially to those who are often overlooked.
