Pune: Speeding Car Kills One, Residents Allege Police Protection for Illegal Late-Night Restaurants
Mohammadwadi, 21st October 2025: An early-morning accident near Raheja Premiere in NIBM Annexe–Mohammadwadi has sparked public outrage, with residents alleging that unchecked late-night activity and police negligence are endangering lives in the rapidly developing area. One person died in the accident.
According to locals, the crash involved a speeding car driven by a group of youths who had reportedly been at a restaurant near Ganga Kingston until around 5:30 am, just before the incident. Residents claim the hotel, which allegedly remains open until the early hours, operates in violation of closure norms with apparent backing from the Kalepadal police station.
“The hotel owner is politically connected and has influence over local police. Such places have become hotspots for drug use and disturbances,” said a resident who wished to remain anonymous.
Citizens further allege that multiple restaurants along the NIBM–Mohammadwadi stretch continue to function late into the night despite repeated complaints to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and police. They point to overspeeding, flawed road design, and alleged corruption as factors creating a hazardous environment for commuters and residents alike.
Residents have called on the Pune Police Commissioner and PMC Commissioner to take immediate action against illegal establishments and negligent officials, demanding accountability for lapses that, they say, have turned the neighbourhood into a hub of lawlessness.
