Pune: Health Minister Prakash Abitkar Urges Serum Institute to Lead Efforts in Cervical Cancer Vaccination
Pune, 30th October 2025: Maharashtra’s Minister of Public Health and Family Welfare, Prakash Abitkar, has urged the Serum Institute of India (SII) to take the lead in developing and promoting a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer among women.
During his visit to the Serum Institute’s Hadapsar facility, Abitkar reviewed ongoing research projects, vaccine production processes, and future initiatives of the organization. He also held detailed discussions with Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla, Managing Director of the Serum Institute, and reviewed the institute’s efforts to develop a preventive HPV vaccine for cervical cancer.
Speaking on the occasion, Abitkar said, “Along with vaccination, awareness, timely diagnosis, and treatment are equally important in preventing cervical cancer. Considering the growing prevalence of cervical cancer among women in the state, it is essential to strengthen preventive measures and conduct regular screening campaigns.”
Dr. Poonawalla stated, “Cervical cancer remains one of the major health challenges among women, and in this context, the Serum Institute is actively working on developing an HPV vaccine.”
During his visit, the Health Minister also inspected the institute’s research department, vaccine production units, and laboratories. Dr. Poonawalla and senior officials of the Serum Institute accompanied him during the inspection.
