Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University’s Online Programs Witness Strong Demand; Surge in MBA and MCA Enrollments
Pune, 4th November 2025: Savitribai Phule Pune University’s (SPPU) School of Open and Online Learning has received an exceptional response to its online degree programs this academic year, with a marked increase in admissions to the MBA and MCA courses.
Admissions for the 2025–26 academic year were open until October 15 for undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Arts and Commerce under both distance and online formats, and for MBA and MCA programs in the online mode. Officials said that compared to traditional distance learning, students are increasingly preferring fully online courses due to flexibility, affordability, and academic equivalence with regular degrees.
According to official data, 2,676 students have enrolled so far this year, compared to 3,058 students last year, with the online mode showing a clear upward trend. The online MBA program, launched just last year with 14 students, has now surged to 333 admissions, while the newly introduced online MCA course has drawn 69 students in its very first year.
In comparison, distance MBA admissions increased from 218 to 236 this year. Traditional streams also continue to attract strong participation, BA (521), BCom (775), MA (408), and MCom (334).
Dr. Vaibhav Jadhav, Director of the School of Open and Online Learning, attributed this rise to the University’s progressive policy decisions. “The recognition of online and distance degrees as equivalent to regular ones, coupled with the flexibility to pursue two degrees simultaneously, has encouraged more students to apply. Students from urban, semi-urban, and rural areas alike are finding these programs convenient and affordable,” he said.
The School’s initiatives aim to expand access to quality higher education, particularly for women, working professionals, and students who cannot attend regular classes. With growing digital infrastructure and the University’s focus on flexible learning, SPPU is emerging as a major hub for online education.
