Asia’s only automobile-free hill station, Matheran — which translates to “forest on the forehead” — lies about 80 km from Mumbai. Known for its red mud paths, British-era bungalows, panoramic viewpoints, and serene atmosphere, the town has long been a haven for those seeking a peaceful retreat from urban life.
The toy train, originally introduced in 1907 by philanthropist Abdul Hussein Adamjee Peerbhoy, has remained an enduring symbol of Matheran’s identity. Its rhythmic whistle and gentle pace have, for generations, evoked fond memories for travellers and railway enthusiasts alike.
With operations now restored, Central Railway has urged visitors to plan their trips early and experience the magic of this century-old journey once again — a ride that seamlessly blends natural beauty, nostalgia, and heritage across the lush green valleys of the Western Ghats.
