Pune, 21st November 2025: The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has submitted its technical investigation report on the devastating Navale Bridge accident of November 13, confirming that overspeeding and loss of control by the driver were the primary reasons behind the crash that killed eight people.

The container truck, which was travelling from Satara toward Mumbai, was reportedly moving at high speed as it descended the slope of Navale Bridge. According to senior RTO officials, the driver lost control on the downward gradient, causing the vehicle to skid, crash, and burst into flames.

The RTO’s mechanical scrutiny found no manufacturing or structural faults in the truck. However, due to extensive fire damage, investigators were unable to conclusively determine whether the brakes had failed before the impact. The report notes that continuous braking on the steep descent may have overheated or weakened the braking system, potentially contributing to the driver’s inability to control the vehicle.

The Navale Bridge stretch on the Pune–Satara highway has witnessed repeated fatal accidents in recent years. The latest incident, which resulted in eight deaths and severe vehicle damage, has prompted the administration to strengthen enforcement measures on the corridor.

In response to rising safety concerns, the RTO has deployed two dedicated flying squads on the Pune–Satara Highway. The teams will be stationed near the Khed-Shivapur toll plaza and begin operations from Friday.

The first squad will be responsible for:
Conducting routine vehicle inspections
Checking for drunken driving
Monitoring overspeeding and other traffic violations

The second squad will focus on driver awareness, particularly targeting operators of heavy vehicles such as containers, trailers and long-distance trucks.
Drivers will receive counselling on:
Accident-prone zones
Safe driving techniques on steep slopes
Correct use of brakes during downhill travel
Risks associated with driving in neutral gear

“Both squads have been activated to curb the rising number of crashes. They will conduct inspections, enforce regulations, and counsel drivers on safe practices,” said Deputy Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale.

The move is expected to enhance safety on critical downhill sections such as Navale Bridge, where a combination of overspeeding, heavy traffic and gradients has resulted in frequent and major accidents.
