Pune Municipal Commissioner Approves 25 Specialist Doctors, Rs 42 Crore Upgrade for Kamala Nehru Hospital
Pune, 6th December 2025: In a major step to strengthen public healthcare, Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram announced the urgent appointment of 25 specialist doctors at Kamala Nehru Hospital, the city’s largest municipal hospital serving economically weaker sections. The appointments were cleared during a standing committee meeting, with salaries set between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh per month, based on experience. Additionally, the committee sanctioned Rs 42 crore for hospital renovations and infrastructure upgrades.
Kamala Nehru Hospital had been struggling with a shortage of specialist doctors, forcing many patients to seek treatment elsewhere. Previously, the municipality offered salaries of only Rs 50,000–Rs 70,000, which failed to attract qualified professionals. The administration has now revised the remuneration package significantly to attract experienced specialists and meet the hospital’s growing healthcare demands.
In addition to doctors, the hospital will also recruit nurses and technical staff to improve patient care. Interviews are expected in the coming weeks, and advertisements for the vacant positions will be released shortly. Health department officials have been instructed to expedite the hiring process, with the goal of completing appointments by next week.
Commissioner Ram highlighted that Kamala Nehru Hospital, located in Mangalwar Peth, primarily serves the general population at affordable rates. The approved Rs 42 crore renovation budget follows a prior approval of Rs 13 crore for essential repairs. These measures aim to modernize hospital facilities and ensure quality healthcare for patients without forcing them to rely on private hospitals.
“Patients visiting Pune Municipal hospitals often come from economically weaker backgrounds. It is our responsibility to provide them with quality care at affordable rates. We are taking immediate steps to strengthen Kamala Nehru Hospital, including the urgent appointment of 25 specialist doctors,” said Commissioner Ram.
