Mumbai–Pune Expressway Hit By Massive Traffic Jam Near Lonavala
Lonavala, 13th December 2025: A heavy influx of vehicles towards Pune led to major traffic congestion on the Khopoli–Bor Ghat section on Saturday, causing prolonged delays for commuters. Traffic flow was severely affected on both the Mumbai–Pune Expressway and the old Mumbai–Pune highway as vehicles moved at a slow pace for several kilometres.
Officials reported intense congestion in the Bor Ghat stretch between Khopoli and Khandala, with long lines of vehicles extending from the Shingroba Temple area up to the Dashturi traffic check post. Traffic movement was particularly affected near key bottlenecks such as the Amrutanjan Bridge and Battery Hill, where vehicles were nearly stationary for long periods.
Motorists also experienced delays from the Khandala tunnel to the Khandala overbridge, with traffic inching forward. On the old Khandala–Lonavala road, queues of vehicles were reported to be around 7 to 8 kilometres long, adding to the difficulties faced by travellers.

Teams from the Raigad Traffic Police, Pune Rural Traffic Police and Highway Traffic Police were deployed on the ground to manage the situation and clear congestion. According to officials, the traffic build-up was primarily due to a weekend travel rush, as many residents from Mumbai headed towards Pune and nearby hill stations, along with traffic violations by some drivers.
Authorities said traffic conditions are expected to improve gradually and urged commuters to cooperate, follow lane discipline and adhere to traffic regulations to help ease the situation.
