Pune, 3rd November 2026: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Pune, has seized and destroyed 303 kg of barfi worth approximately Rs 1.21 lakh from a sweets shop in Dhanore village of Khed taluka, Pune district, over concerns about its quality and improper storage.

The action was carried out on November 2, 2026, at R. Bikaner Mithai, located at Mauli Complex on the Alandi-Markal Road in Dhanore, as part of the ‘Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra’ campaign launched under the leadership of Maharashtra Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe.
During the inspection, FDA officials found 303 kg of barfi, valued at approximately Rs 1,21,200, and a loose sample of kalakand at the establishment.

According to the FDA, the barfi stock was suspected to be of substandard quality. Officials also found that the sweets were stored at room temperature, did not carry labels and were not supported by purchase invoices.

Considering the perishable nature of the product, the seized stock of 303 kg of barfi was destroyed on the spot. A sample of kalakand was collected and sent for testing and analysis.

The inspection was conducted by Food Safety Officer H. R. Marewar under the guidance of Regional Assistant Commissioner S. N. Chatte and Joint Commissioner (Food) S. Karkale.

The FDA has appealed to food business operators to ensure proper storage of food products, comply with mandatory labelling requirements and maintain purchase invoices and other relevant documents.
