Pune: PET Scan to Cost Rs 12,000 at PMC centre, Nearly Half of Private Hospital Rates
Pune, 14th December 2025: In a major relief for cancer patients, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to inaugurate a low-cost PET scan facility in the city on Monday, December 15. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate the centre, which has been named after late Member of Parliament Girish Bapat.
PET scans play a crucial role in diagnosing cancer by determining the extent and spread of the disease in the body. While such facilities are currently available in private hospitals in Pune, the cost of a single PET scan typically ranges between ₹20,000 and ₹25,000, making it unaffordable for many patients. Until now, PMC-run hospitals did not offer this service.
According to civic officials, the newly established PET scan centre will provide the test at a subsidised rate of ₹12,000, significantly reducing the financial burden on patients. The facility has been set up at Hirabaug Kothi, opposite Sanas Ground.
The initiative was conceived to address the growing demand for affordable cancer diagnostics in the city. The proposal was originally put forward by the BJP city president while serving as the leader of the house in the PMC and was subsequently pursued with the civic administration. An allocation of ₹8 crore was made in the PMC budget for the project.
“This is the first project of its kind in the country to be started through a municipal corporation,” said Dheeraj Ghate, adding that the centre is expected to benefit a large number of cancer patients who currently depend on expensive private healthcare facilities.
The launch of the PET scan centre is being seen as a significant step towards strengthening public healthcare infrastructure in Pune and improving access to advanced diagnostic services at affordable rates.
