Summer 2026: Pune’s Streets to Get Electric Double-Decker PMPML Buses for Commuters
Pune, 18th December 2025: Pune residents may soon relive the nostalgia of double-decker bus rides as the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) prepares to reintroduce these iconic vehicles to the city’s streets in April next year.
PMPML has officially floated a tender for the procurement of 25 double-decker buses. In a move aimed at enhancing both sustainability and passenger comfort, the new buses will be fully electric and air-conditioned.
The decision comes after successful trial runs conducted in different parts of Pune, which demonstrated the buses’ suitability for city roads. With the tender process now underway, officials expect the buses to begin operations by April or May, coinciding with the peak summer season.
The buses will be acquired on a lease basis. This initiative represents a significant upgrade to Pune’s public transport fleet while reviving a much-loved element of the city’s transport heritage.
Officials believe the new double-deckers will not only improve commuting comfort but also contribute to Pune’s efforts to promote environmentally friendly public transportation.
Each bus costs Rs two crore and have sitting capacity of 70 passengers while 40 passengers can stand.
At present, over 12 lakh passengers daily in PMPML buses on 381 routes.
