Pune: Upgraded Pune–Satara Highway Brings Relief to Commuters, Improves Safety and Traffic Flow

Pune, 23rd December 2025: Commuters travelling on the Pune–Satara Highway are beginning to experience smoother and faster journeys following the completion of a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at tackling long-standing congestion and safety issues on one of western Maharashtra’s busiest corridors.

Implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in collaboration with MD Infra, the revamp has introduced structural changes designed to streamline traffic movement and reduce pressure on the main carriageway. A key feature of the project is the systematic diversion of two-wheelers and light motor vehicles to strengthened service roads, allowing uninterrupted flow for long-distance and heavy vehicles on the highway.

As part of the overhaul, the main road has been resurfaced, while service roads have been widened at multiple high-traffic locations. Officials said the Pune–Satara corridor includes approximately 120 km of service roads, of which nearly 40 km have been expanded. These widened sections now measure 10.5 metres, effectively converting many stretches into three-lane service roads.

Traffic management has been significantly improved by separating local and slow-moving vehicles from high-speed traffic. Authorities noted that this segregation has eased congestion at several chronic bottlenecks, particularly during peak hours, while also improving travel efficiency for commercial transport.

Safety was a central focus of the project, with the Pune–Satara stretch historically identified as accident-prone. “Better road geometry, wider carriageways and clear traffic segregation have helped create a more organised traffic environment. These changes are crucial for reducing accident risks,” an NHAI official said.

Initial commuter response has been positive, with regular highway users reporting reduced travel time and smoother traffic flow during peak periods. The shift of two-wheeler traffic to service roads has further eased congestion on the main highway, offering sustained relief to daily commuters and long-distance travellers alike.
