Pune Metro to Run All Night on New Year’s Eve, Offering Safe and Congestion-Free Travel
Pune, 31st December 2025: To ensure seamless travel and enhance commuter safety during New Year celebrations, the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) has decided to operate Pune Metro services throughout the night of December 31 across all operational corridors.
As part of the special arrangement, metro trains will run continuously from 11:00 pm on December 31 until 6:00 am on January 1. During the extended hours, services will be available at an average frequency of 20 minutes, with schedules modified dynamically based on passenger turnout. Regular daily operations will resume after 6:00 am.
Confirming the decision, Chandrashekhar Tambvekar, Public Relations Officer, MahaMetro, Pune, said the move aims to provide a reliable and safe public transport option for citizens travelling late at night during New Year festivities.
Pune typically experiences a surge in movement on New Year’s Eve, with restaurants, hotels, pubs, entertainment venues, and religious places remaining open well beyond midnight. This often leads to traffic congestion, limited parking availability, and safety concerns. MahaMetro officials said the demand for overnight services has been growing, with repeated appeals from commuters and civic organisations. The decision also aligns with similar initiatives undertaken by Mumbai Metro.
According to officials, uninterrupted metro operations will help ease pressure on road traffic, discourage drunk driving, and offer a secure commuting option for partygoers and late-night travellers. They noted that overnight metro services introduced during the 2023–24 New Year celebrations were well received by the public.
Metro ridership in Pune has been steadily increasing over recent months. Average daily passenger numbers rose from 2.13 lakh in August 2025 to 2.53 lakh in September, while October figures remained close to the two-lakh mark. Authorities expect a further spike during New Year’s Eve, similar to trends seen during major festivals and public events.
To manage the anticipated rush, MahaMetro has strengthened crowd control and security arrangements, including provisions for deploying additional trains, enhanced CCTV surveillance, increased station staff, and close coordination with city and traffic police. Traffic personnel will also be positioned at key intersections to regulate vehicular movement and conduct checks.
Appealing to citizens to opt for public transport, MahaMetro said the overnight metro service would contribute to safer roads and smoother celebrations as Pune welcomes the New Year.
